The story

Six years ago he hid a stolen diamond in wet cement. They built a police station on top of it.

Tonight he walks in wearing a dead man's badge to dig it out — and picks the one night an armed crew comes to drill the vault that backs onto his column. To reach the stone, he has to save the building. To save the building, he has to be the hero he was only pretending to be.

He does it the wrong way. He saves every one of them. It doesn't matter — the badge was never his, and the man who takes it from him has been waiting for that diamond longer than anyone. Six years of waiting against a single morning.
